Head of the Polar Policy Department, Korea Polar Research Institute
Hyo-Sun Kim is a Head of the Polar Policy Department at the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI). She carries out research projects on public-private partnership on energy and climate security with the Arctic community and conducts non-market evaluation on climate change impacts of the changing Arctic environment. Before she joined KOPRI, she worked for the Korea Gas Corporation from May 1996 to January 2015 as a Senior Economist and served at the UN Development Program from May 1998 to May 1999 as a Programme Officer of the Energy and Environment Division.
Currently, she serves as a Secretary General of the Korean Society of Climate Change Research. She is also a Director of the Korea Environmental Economics Association and a Coordinator of Climate-Energy Financing Forum in Korea. In these roles, she promotes economic opportunity, global sustainability and community development through coordination of natural gas and renewable projects, and advisory services on carbon markets. In a career spanning the public, private, and international organization, she has become an expert on how financial and economic tools can address global policy challenges. She served in advisory policy positions including a leading facilitator for Trading Committee of Carbon Market Advisers for Ministry of Industry, a member of Program Committee for Sustainable Development under International Gas Union, and a member of Advisory Committee for Korean Ministry of Environment.
